This article includes the bottom-to-top method to compare and rank cards from Fate Reforged. We will predict the potential of cards simply on their abilities; deck types are not considered in our ranking system.
What do we care about?
Pure damage - How many points of damage can it deal if resolved or unblocked?
Card Advantage - What can the card do to bring you advantages over your opponent (one of for X)?
Mana Feasibility - Is it easy to splash in various decks? How many mana do they cost?
Protection - How strong are they against opponent's spells?
1. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
It's much slower than Elspeth but highly splashable among the control decks/ramp decks. I don't think it will be great in this Standard as enemies of control may be fast enough to finish the game before you draw Ugin.
2. Monastery Mentor
It's very good in Legacy and Vintage, where spells are cheap. In standard, I think it's hard to unlock its real power right now.
3. Soulfire Grand Master
Both fast decks and control decks want this card. I wonder if it is the new Snapcaster Mage.
4. Whisperwood Elemental
We can compare card with Nassa, which is a five mana cost planeswalker, giving one 4/4 creature a turn. Nassa is not played frequently in current standard. Maybe we need to give Whisperwood Elemental some time. It may rise back later in a way like Brimaz, King of Oreskos.

5. Shaman of the Great Hunt
I think it is something GR decks need in this Standard. In early turns, it supports the smaller creatures you cast in first 1-3 turns. In late game, there is a chance for it to do direct 4 damage the turn after opponent's mass removal. Also, if we are in an empty battlefield and both players have nothing to cast, the first player who casts Shaman and activates its card drawing ability will have huge advantage.
6. Flamewake Phoenix
In this set, it's the only creature that can return from graveyard. It can not be targeted by Abzan Charm and Valorous Stance. Its flying ability is powerful because we have already got many defensive card like Rhinos and other 5 or more toughness cards but only very few of them can block flyers. Plus, creatures with 4 power are easy to cast these days. This is the card I want to collect.
